AI prompt generator

Set your prompt like a typesetter sets a page: one component at a time. Role, task, context, format, rules, example. Every filled slot shows up on the composing stick, the score tells you what is still missing, and AI can polish the result.

  • Clear task verb missingStart with an explicit action: “Write…”, “Summarize…”, “Compare…”.
  • Background or context missingSay who it is for and why you need it; models fill gaps with generic guesses.
  • Role or perspective missingGive a perspective: “You are a senior UX writer…”. It sets vocabulary and depth.
  • Output format stated missingName the shape of the answer: table, bullets, JSON, 3 paragraphs.
  • Length or scope limit missingCap the length: “under 150 words”, “5 bullets”.
  • Constraints or rules missingAdd rules: what to avoid, what must be included, reading level.
  • Example or reference missingShow one example of the output you want. Few-shot beats description.
  • Specific, not vague missingReplace vague words (good, nice, interesting) with concrete criteria.

Let AI polish it

Sends your filled-in fields to the AI helper, which writes a complete prompt and marks gaps as [placeholders].

Why structure beats a one-liner

A model only knows what is in the prompt. “Write a product description” leaves it to guess the product, the reader, the length and the voice, so it guesses the average of the internet. Each field in the generator removes one guess:

  • Task: one explicit verb and object. “Summarise”, “Compare”, “Draft”.
  • Role: sets vocabulary and depth. See role prompting for when it helps and when it doesn’t.
  • Context and audience: the facts the model cannot know, and who the answer is for.
  • Format and length: the shape of the answer. Models follow “5 bullets, under 80 words” far more reliably than “keep it short”.
  • Constraints: what to avoid and what must be included.
  • Example: the single biggest upgrade. That is few-shot prompting.

Already have a prompt? Paste it into the prompt optimizer to see which of these it is missing. Making images instead of text? Try the Midjourney builder, the Stable Diffusion generator or the image prompt generator. For the theory, read the prompt engineering guide.

Questions

How do I make an AI prompt?

Start with one clear task and a verb (“Write”, “Summarise”, “Compare”), then add the context the AI cannot guess, who the answer is for, the format and length you want, any rules, and ideally one example. Fill those fields above and the generator assembles them in the right order.

What is the best AI prompt generator?

The best one is the one that shows you why a prompt works, not just a rewrite. CraftPrompts combines a structured builder, an instant score with specific fixes, model-specific formats (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Midjourney, Stable Diffusion, Veo, Suno) and an optional AI polish, all free and without an account.

How can I get free AI prompts?

Use the free prompt templates (fill-in-the-blank prompts for writing, sales, work, code, learning, images and video), or build your own here at no cost. Save the ones that work to your browser-based library.

Is this AI prompt generator free?

Yes. The builder, optimizer scoring, token counter and every template work instantly in your browser at no cost and without an account. The optional AI helper is free too, with a fair-use limit per visitor.

Which AI models do the prompts work with?

The structured prompts work with any chat model: ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Llama, Mistral and others. For model-specific formatting use the ChatGPT (markdown headings) or Claude (XML tags) generators; for images use the Midjourney, Stable Diffusion or image prompt generators.

What makes a good AI prompt?

A clear task, the context the model cannot guess, a named output format and length, constraints, and ideally one example. OpenAI and Anthropic both give this advice in their prompting guides. The generator turns each of those into a field so nothing gets forgotten.

Do you store my prompts?

No. Fields and saved prompts live in your browser’s localStorage. Nothing is sent anywhere unless you press an AI button, and then only the text you are working on is sent to generate the reply. You can clear everything from the Library page.

Can I use AI to write the prompt for me?

Yes. Fill in as little as the task and press “Draft with AI”. The helper writes a complete prompt and marks anything it had to leave open as [placeholders], so it never invents facts about your business.
