Grok prompt generator
Structured prompts for xAI’s Grok. Be explicit about the task, the sources you want it to use and the tone you want, because Grok’s default voice is more casual than most assistants.
Fill in a few fields and your prompt is set here, line by line.

- Clear task verb missingStart with an explicit action: “Write…”, “Summarize…”, “Compare…”.
- Background or context missingSay who it is for and why you need it; models fill gaps with generic guesses.
- Role or perspective missingGive a perspective: “You are a senior UX writer…”. It sets vocabulary and depth.
- Output format stated missingName the shape of the answer: table, bullets, JSON, 3 paragraphs.
- Length or scope limit missingCap the length: “under 150 words”, “5 bullets”.
- Constraints or rules missingAdd rules: what to avoid, what must be included, reading level.
- Example or reference missingShow one example of the output you want. Few-shot beats description.
- Specific, not vague missingReplace vague words (good, nice, interesting) with concrete criteria.

Prompting Grok well
Say when you want current information
Grok can search the web and X. If you need recent information, say so and ask it to list its sources; if you don’t, say “use only the text I provide”.
Set the tone explicitly
Grok tends toward an informal, witty default. For work output, put “Tone: neutral and professional” in the prompt.
Format and length still matter
As with any model, specify the output shape (“5 bullets, under 15 words each”) to avoid long, rambling answers.

Questions
How do I write a good Grok prompt?
Use the same structure as for any strong prompt: a clear task, the context Grok needs, the output format and length, and rules. Add whether it should search for current information and what tone to use.
Can Grok prompts include real-time information?
Grok can access web and X search. Ask it explicitly to look up current information and cite sources, and check those sources yourself before relying on them.
Does this work for Grok image generation?
For images, use the image prompt generator, which writes natural-language descriptions that suit Grok’s image model and similar models.
